Portfolio

Nine projects. Including the numbers that went the wrong way.

We publish contract values, durations, peak workforce and safety results because a portfolio where every project finished early and under budget is not a portfolio, it is a brochure. Two of the nine below were difficult. One is described in full, including what it cost us.

$1,402M Combined contract value

Across the nine projects on this page, 2019–2026.

9 Markets and delivery methods

Design-build, CMAR, design-bid-build and contract mining.

11.4M Hours worked

With one lost-time incident and four recordable injuries in total.

7 Delivered early

Seven of nine reached substantial completion at or ahead of contract date.

Difficult projects

What happens when it goes wrong.

Two projects in the portfolio above did not go to plan. One is the 2017 water reclamation package we have already discussed elsewhere on this site. The other is below, a project where the ground was not what the geotechnical report said it was, and where the schedule consequence landed on us.

Rio Grande Levee Restoration, Reach 4, $43M

What happened. The contract documents indicated continuous lean clay over the full 14.2-mile reach. At mile 6.4 we encountered a 900-foot lens of loose saturated sand underlying the levee prism. The specified method, excavate and recompact in place, could not produce a stable embankment, so the design required a soil-cement-bentonite cutoff wall that was not in the bid.

What it cost. 26 weeks of extra programme and $5.8M of additional cost. As a design-bid-build contract with a differing-site-conditions clause and pre-bid geotechnical data relied upon in our bid, we recovered $4.9M of that through the modification process. We carried the balance.

What changed. We now commission our own geotechnical investigation, our own boreholes, our own geologist, our own risk register, on every levee, dam and channel project we price, regardless of what the owner provides. It costs roughly 0.3% of contract value and we will not bid flood control work without it.
