Accessibility
Our commitment
If you cannot use our website or reach our telephone service, you cannot do business with us. That is a commercial problem as well as an ethical one, so we treat accessibility as a delivery requirement rather than a project we get around to.
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, and to the Revised Section 508 standards where our federal contracting work requires it.
How we approach it
- Tested, not assumed. Pages are checked with automated tooling and then manually with keyboard-only navigation, a screen reader (NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS) and at 200% and 400% zoom.
- Plain structure. Semantic headings in order, one main landmark per page, lists marked up as lists, tables with header cells, forms with real labels rather than placeholder text.
- Keyboard first. Every interactive element, navigation, mobile menu, accordions, filters, forms, is reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator and a skip-to-content link at the top of every page.
- Contrast. Body text and interactive elements meet or exceed 4.5:1. Our dark sections use off-white rather than pure white on deep ink to reduce halation for readers with astigmatism.
- Motion. Scroll animations are subtle and are disabled entirely when your system requests reduced motion.
- Telephone service. Our automated receptionist is designed to be usable by people who speak slowly, use alternative communication, or are hard of hearing. It will repeat itself, slow down, spell things back, and transfer you to a human being the moment you ask. You are never required to use the automated system.
Known limitations
We would rather list these than claim full conformance we have not verified. As at the date above:
- Illustrations. Our technical illustrations are decorative and are marked as such so screen readers skip them. They carry no information that is not in the text.
- Project filter. The market and delivery filters work without JavaScript (all records remain visible and in the page), but the count update and the "no results" message require JavaScript. If you have JavaScript disabled you will see all nine projects, no content is hidden.
- Automated voice agent. Speech recognition is less reliable on poor telephone lines, with strong accents, or where there is background noise. This is a genuine limitation of the technology. The agent will offer to transfer to a person, and you can also submit your enquiry in writing on our contact page.
- Third-party content. Where we embed content from another provider, we cannot guarantee its accessibility. We avoid doing so where an accessible alternative exists.
Alternative formats and reasonable adjustments
We will provide any information from this website, or from a telephone conversation with us, in an alternative format at no charge. That includes large print, plain text, a document read out over the telephone, or an accessible PDF. For project documents, drawings and specifications, we will discuss what you need.
If you need a reasonable adjustment at any stage, applying for a job, attending an interview, visiting a site, or receiving an induction, tell us and we will arrange it. We do not require you to disclose a diagnosis or a medical condition to receive an adjustment.
Reporting a problem
If something on this site does not work for you, please tell us. We would rather hear about it than not.
- Telephone, (303) 555-0142, answered 24 hours a day. Ask for the Digital team, or for a human being if you reach the automated receptionist first.
- Email, media@ironwoodgroups.com
- Post, Digital team, Ironwood Civil & Industrial Group, Inc., 4820 Brighton Boulevard, Suite 300, Denver, Colorado 80216
Please tell us the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser, operating system or assistive technology you were using. We acknowledge accessibility reports within two business days and tell you what we intend to do about it, including a date where a fix is planned.
If you are not satisfied with our response, ask for it to be escalated to the Chief Information Officer. If you remain unsatisfied on a federal contract matter, you may contact the agency's Section 508 coordinator or file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice.
Training and accountability
Our web developers and content authors complete accessibility training annually. Accessibility is a line item in the acceptance criteria for any website or application change: a feature is not complete until it has been keyboard-tested and screen-reader-checked. An accessibility defect on a released page is treated as a bug with the same priority as a functional defect.
