IRONWOOD Civil & Industrial Group

Home/About

Since 2001

Eleven people, one excavator, and a habit of saying yes.

Ironwood started in a rented yard on Brighton Boulevard doing subdivision utilities for Front Range developers. Twenty-five years later we build interstates, process plants, generation and mine infrastructure on four continents, with the same operating assumption: if we say we will be there, we will be there.

Who we are

A builder that stayed a builder.

A lot of contractors our size become brokers. The crews get thinner, the margins get passed downstream, and the owner ends up holding a contract with a company that mostly manages other companies.

We went the other direction. Between 2008 and 2022 we added mechanical and piping, electrical and instrumentation, structural steel erection, and a 210-person engineering group, all of it inside the company. Today 78% of the value of a typical Ironwood heavy civil contract is executed by people on our own payroll, under our own supervisors, holding our own safety programme.

It is a harder way to run a business. Equipment has to be bought, not rented. Apprentices have to be trained, not hired off a union hall at the last minute. Bonding capacity has to be earned through balance sheet performance rather than brokered. But it means that when an owner calls us about a problem on Tuesday, somebody is on a plane Tuesday night, and it means the crews fixing it report to us.

Built to outlast.

Our name comes from the ironwood tree, slow growing, dense, and almost impossible to bend. It is a slightly stubborn tagline for a company that has been accused of being slightly stubborn. We have kept it for twenty-five years.

  • Employee owned. . Every eligible employee holds stock through the ESOP.
  • Privately held. No private equity owner, no debt-driven acquisition programme, no plan to sell the company in five years.
  • Self-perform at scale. 3,100 pieces of company-owned iron, four fabrication shops, and craft crews in twelve MSHA- and OSHA-regulated trade classes.
  • Deliberately mid-sized. Large enough to bond a $750M single project, small enough that the CEO knows the superintendent's first name.

Our history

Twenty-five years, told honestly.

Including the years that were difficult. A company with no bad years in its history has not been around long enough to have any.

  • 2001

    Founded in Denver

Dan Whitfield and two partners incorporate Ironwood with eleven employees and a single used excavator, taking on subdivision utilities and small municipal drainage work across the Front Range.

  • 2004

    First state DOT contract

Awarded a $9.4M Colorado DOT bridge replacement in Weld County on the strength of the utility crew's reputation. The company becomes a recurring CDOT contractor within three years.

  • 2008

    Into industrial work

Opens a mechanical and piping division and takes on brownfield expansion work at a Denver-area refinery, the beginning of the Industrial Facilities business line.

  • 2011

    Energy division formed

Substation and transmission work for regional utilities grows into a standalone division. Opens the Houston office to serve Gulf Coast midstream clients.

  • 2014

    Employee ownership

The founding partners sell a majority stake to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, making every employee an owner. The structure is unchanged today.

  • 2016

    First federal prime award

Awarded a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers levee rehabilitation contract as prime contractor, establishing the internal accounting and compliance infrastructure required for federal work.

  • 2018

    Mining practice established

Opens the Casper office after winning a Wyoming overburden removal contract, moving into contract mining and progressive reclamation.

  • 2020

    First international project

Enters Chile through a joint venture on a copper concentrator expansion, working at 3,100 metres elevation in the Atacama region.

  • 2022

    Design-build at scale

Wins the I-70 Floyd Hill progressive design-build contract, the largest single award in company history, and expands in-house engineering to 210 staff.

  • 2024

    Andean and Asia-Pacific footprint

Andean joint venture delivers 4.1 million hours without a lost-time incident. Opens a delivery partnership in Perth, Western Australia.

  • 2026

    Twenty-five years

Operating from eight offices in four countries with 1,850 employees, a $1.5B aggregate bonding capacity and a three-year EMR of 0.61.

The years we would rather not discuss

2009–2011: revenue fell 46% and we laid off 340 people, including people who had been with us from the beginning. 2017: a $61M wastewater package in the Southwest went wrong in the ground and cost us $7.4M to complete. 2021: a steel supply chain failure on an Arizona project put us eleven weeks behind on a schedule we had guaranteed.

We mention them because the response is the point. The 2017 loss produced our current geotechnical risk-review process before bid. The 2021 delay produced the dual-source procurement policy we now apply to every fabricated commodity on a critical path. Owners who ask us about failures get a straight answer and a specific process change.

How we are organised

Four operating groups, one balance sheet.

Business lines exist so that a mining client is served by people who only do mining. But a single surety facility, a single safety programme and a single set of financial systems sit behind all of them.

01, Operating group

Heavy Civil Construction

Our founding discipline. We self-perform the critical path, mass excavation, structural concrete, bridge erection and drainage, rather than brokering it out and hoping.

  • Self-perform78% of contract value
  • DeliveryD-B, CM/GC, low-bid
  • Peak crew840 craft

02, Operating group

Industrial Facilities

Mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation work executed by our own journeymen, with turnover documentation the operations team can actually use.

  • TurnoverFull mechanical + E&I
  • QAITP-driven, weld mapping
  • ShutdownsPlanned and emergent

03, Operating group

Engineering & Design

Design-build only works when the builder controls the design. Our engineers sit in the same building as our estimators and superintendents, which is why our constructability reviews find money instead of problems.

  • In-house staff210
  • Licensed PE / SE64 states + 4 provinces
  • BIM standardISO 19650 aligned

04, Operating group

Construction Management

CM, CMAR and program management for portfolios that cannot absorb another change order. We bring our own trade experience to the owner's side of the table.

  • Programs managed> $4.1B cumulative
  • Schedule variance±2.4% three-year avg.
  • ReportingMonthly, auditable

05, Operating group

General Contracting

One contract, one point of accountability. We hold the trades to the same standard we hold ourselves, and we bond the work.

  • Single bond$750M
  • Aggregate$1.5B
  • SuretyA+ XV rated, Treasury listed

Ownership

What employee ownership actually changes.

It is not a slogan. It is a governance structure with measurable consequences.

Consequence 01

People stay.

Voluntary turnover among salaried staff is 6.1% against a construction-sector average above 14%. Craft turnover is 19%, high by most standards, but roughly half the industry norm for heavy civil.

Consequence 02

Safety stops being theatre.

When the people on the tools own the shares, a stop-work authority is not a cultural programme. Every employee, from a first-week apprentice to a superintendent, can stop a job without asking permission and without retaliation.

Consequence 03

Nobody is selling the company.

There is no financial sponsor planning a three-to-five-year exit, which means we can decline work that does not fit and invest in equipment and apprenticeships that pay back over fifteen years instead of five.

How the ESOP works

Eligible employees receive shares through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan at no cost after one year of service, with vesting on a three-year schedule. Shares are valued annually by an independent appraiser. When an employee leaves or retires, the company repurchases their shares at appraised value. A separate 401(k) with a 6% match sits alongside it, the ESOP is not a replacement for a retirement plan, it is an addition to one.

Where we operate

Eight offices, four countries.

Delivery is run from the offices, not from a corporate centre. Each location carries its own field leadership, estimating and safety staff.
